Patriots
Apropos
The Patriots series are the remnants of a performance installation called Nolens Volens resulting from a series of workshops with an elderly contemporary dance group, around the relationship between the notion of group games, team formations through collaboration and competition. Inspired by ancient games such as tug-of-war or games of capture, the workshops aimed to co-develop a new set of rules for a play involving the use of all the flags of nations that could be found on the planet and which are recognised, or not, by the United Nations.
From these workshops, an immersive happening took place during the opening of a solo exhibition, Mordicus, at the contemporary art space Hall Nord in Geneva. The remains of the performance took the form of a sculptural installation that resulted in knotted flags displayed on shelves. This composition thus reveals the abstract and formal quality of the flag designs lost in an amalgam of symbols. The work was reactivated in 2022 for an art auction at Zaratan Arte contemporânea, in Lisbon, Portugal.
Exhibited in Halle Nord, Geneva, CH, 2019 ; Zaratan Arte contemporânea, Lisbon, PT, 2022 ; FARRA, Elvas, PT 2024.
