Apropos

DOLI INCAPAX is a Latin expression used in law to denote the inability to commit a crime, presented here as a satire on responsibility, guilt, and accountability within power structures.

The work portrays suits in free fall against backgrounds in pastel shades. Like empty skins or stuffed figures, these stringless puppets allude to the bodies they should contain, which yet remain absent.

The suit and tie, symbolic uniforms of bankers, managers or other white-collar professionals, slip from their social status as 'business as usual' to become mere husks. This fall of the absent human can be read as the emancipation of the unclothed, naked person, free from institutional burdens, or as an inevitable movement towards self-destruction.

The drawings are made by hand, through a numerical, rudimentary, non-vectorial gesture, and then outlined with chalk. Strokes instinctively follow the folds and tensions of the fabric, between the digital and the tactile, control and chance. Together, 28 drawings form a fresco on a background initially painted in gouache, based on a landscape of a sunset over the sea at Toulon, a port city home to France's largest military port.
