Atelophobia
Apropos
Atelophobia is a series of wallpapers containing motifs that engage either with the specific moments that a crowd materialises itself or, conversely, with a mass created by grouping individuals or singular objects. Playing with visual illusion of boundlessness, different situations are displayed : riots and throngs, masses on beaches, flocks of people queuing or praying congregations etc. The interest of this work lies in the contrast that exists between individuality and multitude and the strong capacity of the latter to consume the former. Each single person is distinguishable from the other if the pattern is observed closely, yet the overall infinite texture is shaped in definable architecture referencing medieval castles’ battlements, walls, defence windows and churches’ porticos.
Atelophobia comes from the Greek: ατελής - atelès, meaning "imperfect" or "incomplete" and φόβος, phóbos, "fear”. It is an anxiety disorder commonly known as the fear of not doing well enough, or fear of imperfection.
